Story Inspiration Ideas
This is almost exactly the idea I have in mind for what I want the montage to represent, with close up face shot that cut to flashback of traumatic or bad experiences that are shown to give the character motivation to get stronger to be able to face the challenge ahead. One thing I want to take direct inspiration from is the intensity of the workout routine as it really emphasises how much the character wants to get better and displays clearly the motivation the character has to got through the situation and become strong because of it, so If I can get my workout routine to emphasise the level of motivation the character has then it will really help move the audience into routing for the character to succeed.

This training montage shows perfectly that having a good fitting soundtrack and a character building up the intensity of what's happening can completely level up a montage into being levels above anything else in its genre, one very key thing I want to tae from this is the way the intensity of the montage can be taken up a lot by having good fitting music and sound effects to help build it up, one way I want to try and accomplish this is by testing lots of different sounds and music types to find something I think works best to help elevate the montage into being something that gives someone motivation to so the same and get out and train to be fitter as well.

This short film from Omeleto shows a similar story structure and is something I can take notes of as my project is based on a character going through a big change based on the fact that he is being bullies, so in having very similar themes and story this will be useful into looking into how other people have done and being what has worked in theirs to make it a compelling story that I can use to inspire my own. one clear thing that I want to take inspiration of is the grittiness of this short film as I feel that it adds a higher level of realism and makes the audience relate to the character being the victim of bullies on a musher higher level as it makes you feel empathetic towards them. so in having this inspiration I want to incorporate it into my own short my not skimping out on having dialogue that would truly be used to someone being bullied.

I will take a bit from all of these different story ideas to create a base example for all of the different scene ideas that I have, this will save me a lot of trouble going through trial and error to see what looks good and what doesn't.
Mind Map
This mind map is my first real attempt to lay out this projects ground works i.e. main story, props, sets, inspirations etc. This was useful as it has given me a good plan and something I can develop and structure into a working story when I story board it. All of the sets are easily accessible to me and will give me lots of room to set up the scene and make the video look exactly how I am picturing it to be. The foley work will set itself to be fairly straight forward as I have a good way of recording sounds at home and all the the things I need foley sounds for are easily accessible household items such as food, lights, leaves, etc.
Location Recce
Park
This is the location recce for the park scenes, I have chosen 2 images that show the park, the walkway and the field. These are the areas in my video that show the altercations and interactions between the bully and the protagonist. We also did a little bit of test shooting here to make sure it wasn't too overgrown and not too many people were using the area. This area is perfect for what I want it to be used as, as I picture the main character to be isolated when confronted by the bully and this field is only overlooked by some building and the occasional dog walker.
|
House
This is the location recce for the house, it shows 2 key areas that are referenced and seen a lot in the video, my reasoning for using these 2 areas a lot is that the first image of the house shows the audience the main character is home and that he is safe form the bully who has been harassing him, giving the viewer the impression the main character is safe from danger, and the second image shows the bathroom he uses to get ready in the first scene, this bathroom is there to show the main character is starting his day and is away from harm at that point.
|
Training area
These 2 images are the main 2 areas seen in the training montage, the first image depicts the area in which the character is training hard and feeling motivated and ready to get fit, the second picture is the area in which the main character sits down to rest feeling accomplished and proud of himself whilst looking at the growth he has undertaken whilst he has been training in the garden, these areas are also places that the character feels safe from harms way as it is his home, this also reinforces the safety the viewer feels knowing the main character is in a safe place.

Bully Clothing And Character Design Ideas
This depiction of a bully shows the bully in a punk style outfit, this is a common theme among the perception of what a bully should look like and the punky style heavily symbolises some type of emotion they are going through and deciding to take out on others for.
|
This depiction of a bully shows them picking on someone because they are bigger than them, this is also a common theme among bullies as it becomes an easy way to assert yourself over someone as you are bigger than them, a reason for this is that they enjoy the feeling of making their pain someone else's.
|
This depiction of a bully shows them having big muscles and a mean look to them, this bully is someone you can look and see they don't have a good life at home due to bad living conditions or abusive family members. This type of bully is a common depiction in movies as the directors tend to draw back the curtain on the bully life and make people realise why they are bullies in the first place.

Bully and Protagonist final ideas
Here is a collage of a few bullies that I have found art for, a few things all of these bully designs have in common is that they are bigger than the person they are bullying, that they have similar expressions either mocking the person they are bullying or threatening them and having a mad face and are clearly out wanting to cause trouble, this is a theme i want to carry over for my bully as best as I can. My bully will be female and will wear black clothes, this colour choice is to make them look like they're out looking for trouble. My bully will also be steal things, this is to clarify what they're out for and hint towards the financial position they may be faced with as bullies are stereotyped to come from less fortunate backgrounds.
Project Pitch
Updated Script And Story Idea
For me to go forward with re-shooting my project I wanted to update the story a bit to make it easier on myself and to also make it make more sense to a random viewer watching it. My idea is to cut out the first altercation part of the story, as I feel it doesn't really add anything to the story and leaves the viewer more confused than if it was just cut out. I'm also going to get the actors to have dialogue during the altercations to make it feel a bit more realistic.
The story board will go like this:
Morning
The story board will go like this:
Morning
- wake up
- brush teeth
- get in shower
- have sound of shower running
- walk out of bathroom with wet hair and towel around waist
- get dressed and walk out of bedroom
- have drink and walk outside
- phone notification saying to go for a coffee with mum
- Bully sees main character walking along a pathway
- She walks up to him and asks for what's in his pockets whilst holding a weapon (fake)
- She then pushes him away and walks off with his wallet
- He then walks of sad he then messages his mum saying he cant come for coffee
- Takes place outside
- fluid shots of push ups and sit-ups
- finishes with rest at dinner table after workout
Tutor Feedback
After allowing my Tutor to review my second test edit She gave me a lot of feedback on what my next steps are, I have written down all of the feedback in the notes on my phone, and have gone through and completed each bit individually, The feedback for my test edit was that it felt incomplete and needed work to be graded at the higher standard, so what I did was I went out and re-shot and re-edited parts of my project to make sure everything would be held at that higher standard. As even I felt that my recording and video work needed to be drastically improved from my first take on this project.
